Why competitive programming?

Competitive programming is the practice of solving algorithmic problems under time pressure. It teaches precise thinking, careful edge-case analysis, and efficient implementation.

Where to start

Codeforces offers frequent beginner-friendly Div. 3 and Div. 4 contests. CSES provides a well-organized progression through the core topics.

What to study first

1. Basic data structures: arrays, stacks, queues, sets, and maps
2. Sorting, prefix sums, and binary search
3. Greedy algorithms and constructive thinking
4. Dynamic programming, graphs, and foundational number theory

A useful practice loop

• Attempt problems at a manageable difficulty.
• After a serious attempt, read the editorial when stuck.
• Reimplement the idea without copying.
• Revisit difficult problems a few days later.

Consistency beats rushing into problems that are far beyond your current level.
